How's the Surge Going? (May 07)

O'Reilly says Iraq is going better. Other cons are saying we can't know anything until September. Look at the numbers yourself and decide.

It's probably comforting to Fox viewers that Bill O'Reilly thinks things are going better external link.

However the numbers say different. (not that this ever stopped Bill O'Reilly from making stuff up.)

The other line we're hearing from the right is "we can't know anything until September." external link

You don't need a PHD in statistics to look that the numbers and make an educated guess of what the September statistics will tell us: not much.

Not much, except to confirm that Bush and Rumsfeld put in enough troops to trigger a sectarian civil war but stubbornly refused to put in enough troops to quell it

Bush's "mini surge" is too little, too late.

How's the Surge Going? (May 07)

Bush says the surge is working. The numbers say otherwise.

Is Bush deluded or just a shameless spinner?
Bush: Sectarian Killings Drop in Baghdad

Bush said Friday that sectarian murders have dropped by half in Baghdad since the U.S.-Iraqi military buildup began in February, rejecting a Democratic leader's claim that the war is lost. The president said early signs show the operation to quell violence is meeting expectations.

"There are still horrific attacks in Iraq, such as the bombings in Baghdad on Wednesday, but the direction of the fight is beginning to shift," Bush said in his second speech on terrorism in two days.

I have no idea if Bush is lying or not. If not, it mostly means that the militants have moved away from the "surge." Who didn't see that coming?

How's the Surge Going? (April 07)

Let's check in monthly to see how Bush's surge is going.

John McCain thinks this surge is going very well.
McCain, appearing on NBC’s Today show yesterday from Orlando, Florida, said the war “was badly mismanaged. But there are signs of progress everywhere. I am confident that given the opportunity, we can have success. external link
There may be signs of progress but not "everywhere"... the death and suffering remains horrific.

It's too early to see trends but it seems like the Iraq military is taking the biggest hit in this effort.

Two possibilities come to mine: maybe it's because they are are being forced to fight more; or perhaps the insurgents are killing them to send a lethal message to stay at home.

How's the Surge Going? (March 07)

Let's check in monthly to see how Bush's surge is going.

US Military deaths stayed the same but Iraqi military deaths are up. The overall number is down from the month before within the average.

The surge started in the middle of the month.

How's the Surge Going? (Feb 07)

Let's check in monthly to see how Bush's surge is going.

Military deaths were down in January while civilian deaths were up -- bringing the over-all number back up to November levels.

I heard on the radio that about 3,000 of the 21,000 troops were in place but couldn't find that confirmed anywhere

How's the Surge Going? (Jan 2007)

Let's check in monthly to see how Bush's surge is going.

Bush is convinced this is Iraq's last best change for victory. Most Americans think it is too little, too late. Who is going to be right, do you think?

Here are some numbers to track how well the surge is going:
(I'll start a baseline from just before he started floating the surge idea.)
